چکیده
1 A challenge for OT 1.1 Compensatory lengthening as weight conservation Compensatory lengthening occurs when the featural content of a nucleus or moraic coda is deleted, or becomes reaffiliated with a nonmoraic position — typically an onset — and the vacated mora, instead of being lost, is retained with new content (Hayes 1989). Compensatory lengthening is most often triggered by the deletion of a weight-bearing coda consonant. In ancient Greek, when an -sin coda position is lost, its mora survives as a lengthening of a neighboring segment — the preceding vowel in the majority of dialects, the following consonant in Lesbian and Thessalian: /es-mi/ ēmi, emmi ‘I am’ (cf. /es-ti/ esti ‘is’).

Superior oblique tendon lengthening for acquired superior oblique overactions.
Two patients who presented with compensatory head postures and diplopia are described. They both had marked unilateral superior oblique overaction, in one patient due to a large, incomitant skew deviation. Each underwent a superior oblique tendon lengthening procedure using a segment of silicone 240 retinal band as an expander, in combination with a contralateral superior rectus recession. Both...
متن کاملFarsi vowel compensatory lengthening: an experimental approach
This paper addresses a question concerning phonological operations involved standard Farsi vowel Compensatory Lengthening (CL) due to glottal consonant deletion in syllabic coda. Specifically, I question two current views related to CL process. One view suggests that glottal allophonic weakening is compensated by vowel lengthening. Another view suggests that glottal consonant is deleted, but va...
متن کاملSkeletal muscle hypertrophy in response to isometric, lengthening, and shortening training bouts of equivalent duration.
Movements generated by muscle contraction generally include periods of muscle shortening and lengthening as well as force development in the absence of external length changes (isometric). However, in the specific case of resistance exercise training, exercises are often intentionally designed to emphasize one of these modes. The purpose of the present study was to objectively evaluate the rela...
متن کاملCompensatory vowel lengthening for omitted coda consonants: a phonetic investigation of children's early representations of prosodic words.
Children's early word productions often differ from the target form, sometimes exhibiting vowel lengthening when word-final coda consonants are omitted (e.g., dog /dog/ --> [d(c):]). It has typically been assumed that such minimal words lengthening compensates for a missing prosodic unit (a mora). However, this study raises the alternative hypothesis that vowel lengthening in early productions ...
متن کاملA Note on Diphthongization before Tense Sonorants in Irish: An Articulatory Explanation
The well-studied phenomenon of vowel lengthening before tense sonorants in Modern Irish (Ó Siadhail 1989, Ó Siadhail and Wigger 1975, Ó Baoill 1979), exemplified in (1), is now well understood as a compensatory process (see for example Ní Chiosain 1991). Tense or long sonorants (L, L', R', N, N', m) trigger vowel lengthening and/or diphthongization. What is not clear about this phenomenon is th...
